Shigeru Yamasaki -Biography-

Shigeru Yamasaki learned the guitar from Nobutaka Nakagawa, composition and counterpoint from Joji Shigematsu.He took lessons from Narciso Yepes in Japan in 1974.

From 1975 to 78, he went to Spain to study interpretation under Jose Luis Gonzalez, who was one of the beloved disciples of Maestro Andres Segovia. During his stay in Spain, he had numerous concerts in Madrid, Barcelona, Valencia, and everywhere in Spain. All were big hits and he got great acclamation.

In 1978, as the first Japanese he recorded a duet CD in Madrid with Toru Kannari. This CD is now on sale from Dial Label. In the same year, he was invited to show his interpretation at the Bicentenary of Fernando Sor in Paris, organized by International de Guitare du Cercle Guitaristique de l'Ile-de-France (ICGF).

In three consecutive years from 1979 to 81, he gave lessons in the summer international guitar classes organized by ICGF. He also acted as a judge in the contest of the course.

He realized a series of concerts all over the United States in 1988. In 2000, he visited Linares (Spain) as an invited artist of the International Guitar Festival "Andres Segovia".

Now he is quite active in various fields --- solo recital, playing "Aranjuez Concerto" with orchestra, guitar duet, collaboration with flutes, and so on. Also he organized "Guitar Ensemble KOBE" and has held many concerts, each of them has been well received. He serves some official organizations :

  • Full-time instructor of NHK (Japanese television station) Cultural Center in Kobe.
  • Board of the Guitar Art Group.
  • Board of the International Competition of Music for students in Kobe.
  • Member of the Artists Association in Kobe.
  • Member of the Japan Federation of Guitarists.
  • Judge of the Japan Guitar Competition.

He is taking an active part in a lot of charity concerts. He and Guitar Ensemble Kobe held some charity concerts for the victims of the big earthquake in Kobe. Now living in Kobe (Japan), he is quite active to train the next generation and among his students are many top winners of guitar competitions.
